The 2023 World Baseball Classic is in full swing and Team USA had their most dominant performance of the tournament on Monday night. The Americans scored nine runs in the first inning en route to a 12-1 win over Canada. Despite losing to Mexico, Team USA can secure a spot in the Quarterfinals if they beat Colombia on Wednesday. There was also some WBC history on Monday as Puerto Rico threw the first perfect game ever in the tournament. Puerto Rico outplayed Israel in a 10-0 game that was abandoned after eight innings due to the mercy rule.
Pool play in the WBC ends on Wednesday, the same day the quarterfinals begin. The half-quarter-final field is set, Japan, Australia, Cuba and Italy buy their tickets for the knockout round.
This version of the WBC was originally scheduled to be played in 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The action started on Wednesday, March 8 (the 2023 WBC Taiwan opener’s technically first pitch was on March 7 at 11:00pm ET) and there will be a total of 47 games. The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
Many MLB stars are attending the event including Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Francisco Lindor, Mike Trout and Trea Turner.
