The 2023 World Baseball Classic is back. Team USA kicked off their title defense on Saturday night with a Kyle Schwarber-powered win over Great Britain. The USA are back in action against Mexico in Phoenix on Sunday night. Elsewhere, Japan and Shohei Ohtani are on course for the Quarterfinals with a perfect 4-0 finish in pool. Cuba and Italy are also on the rise thanks to a crazy tiebreaker in Pool A. In Group D on Saturday, Venezuela managed a big win against tournament favorites Dominican Republic. The action continues on Sunday with a packed schedule.
This version of the WBC was originally scheduled to be played in 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The action started on Wednesday, March 8 (the 2023 WBC Taiwan opener’s technically first pitch was on March 7 at 11:00pm ET) and there will be a total of 47 games. The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
Many MLB stars are attending the event including Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Francisco Lindor, Mike Trout and Trea Turner.
