The 2023 World Baseball Classic moves into the knockout rounds, with Team USA and Puerto Rico entering the Quarterfinals field. The United States beat Colombia to secure their ticket to the quarterfinals, while Puerto Rico edged out favorites Dominican Republic (but narrowly lost in the process to Edwin Díaz through a post-match injury). The United States play Venezuela on Saturday, Mexico meet Puerto Rico on Friday and Japan host Italy in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
The round started on the other side of the table on Wednesday as Cuba defeated Australia 4-3. The Cubans are set for the semifinals in Miami as the tournament is now a single-elimination round, culminating in the finals on Tuesday, March 21st.
This version of the WBC was originally scheduled to be played in 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The action started on Wednesday, March 8 (the 2023 WBC Taiwan opener’s technically first pitch was on March 7 at 11:00pm ET) and there will be 47 games in total.
