The 2023 World Baseball Classic is in full swing and the pool game concludes on Wednesday with some crucial games on the schedule. Team USA are one win away from the quarterfinals and will advance to the knockout rounds when they defeat Colombia in Phoenix on Wednesday night. Elsewhere in Group C, Mexico won the group and advanced into the group with a 10–3 win over Canada. In Pool D, Venezuela secured a place in the quarterfinals and the other will be decided by winner Puerto Rico versus Dominican Republic in Miami.
The quarter-finals started on the other side of the table on Wednesday as Cuba beat Australia 4-3. The Cubans head to the semifinals in Miami while the rest of the knockout round field is determined on Wednesday. Once the field is fully settled, the tournament will become a single-elimination round, culminating with the finals on Tuesday, March 21st.
This version of the WBC was originally scheduled to be played in 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The action started on Wednesday, March 8 (the 2023 WBC Taiwan opener’s technically first pitch was on March 7 at 11:00pm ET) and there will be 47 games in total. The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
Many MLB stars are attending the event including Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Francisco Lindor, Mike Trout and Trea Turner.
