The 2023 World Baseball Classic is underway, and Team USA is looking to secure one of the final quarterfinal spots in the field on Wednesday. The pool game ends with three crucial games on the schedule. Team USA can advance to the quarterfinals by defeating Colombia in Phoenix. Both Canada-Mexico and Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic — scheduled earlier in the day — are also win-and-advance scenarios. So far, five teams have secured their tickets to the quarter-finals (Japan, Cuba, Italy, Australia and Venezuela) and Wednesday morning saw the start of the knockout stages with Cuba’s victory over Australia.
Once the field is reduced to eight teams, it’s a single-elimination bracket-style tournament with the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, March 21 in Miami.
